Overhead Videography and Photography

I'm lucky to have a designated space for content creation, which means I don't have to set everything up and tear it down every time I film. Having things ready to go has saved me so much time and mental energy, especially on busy weeks.

Overhead Mount Arm

This mount stays up all the time for my "hands and pans style videos."

Support Pole

This was my DIY solution for getting an overhead camera angle higher than a standard tripod could reach. It extends from floor to ceiling next to my kitchen island, where I do most of my filming.

My Camera and Accessories

I've heard it said that you should start shooting with whatever camera you already have, and that's exactly what I did. For a long time, I used my phone for photos and videos, and it worked great. I talk more about that early setup in my Blogging Tools for Beginners post.

Nikon Z 30

I love, love, LOVE this camera. It's simple to use, and the auto feature works great for videography. I loved it so much that I bought a second one for my second lense.

Quick Release Camera Mount

I use quick release camera mounts on every tripod and overhead setup. It's one of those small upgrades that saves time every single shoot. I don't have to waste time unscrewing anything; I just snap the camera on or off and lock the safety.

Lense

Professional macro lenses made a huge difference in my videography. I use a 50mm lens for overhead shots. It gives a clean, sharp look and works perfectly for top-down tutorials.

For food photography, I switch to the 105mm macro, which captures beautiful detail and depth.

Over time, as I got more into video and wanted to improve the quality (and save time while editing). I slowly started upgrading my gear. The macro lenses came later (and they've been game changers), but they weren't where I started.

LED Video Light

I use this LED video light to provide consistent lighting no matter the time of day.

This soft box light diffuser connects to my LED light.

Replacement Camera Battery and Charger Set

These are a must, as I often have to switch batteries in the middle of a shoot.

SD Card Reader

This card reader handles my camera's SanDisk memory cards quickly and reliably. It saves time when I'm transferring video files onto my computer.

Adjustable Desk Setup for Remote Work

The best upgrade I've made recently is my electric standing desk. It has three programmable height settings, and I rotate through them throughout the day.

The desk has three height presets, which I use throughout the day depending on what I'm doing:

Tallest height → standing or using my DeerRun walking pad treadmill
Middle height → when I'm using my under-desk bike pedals
Lowest height → for regular sitting

Being able to switch positions instantly has made a huge difference. I move more, I stay more focused, and I don't end the day feeling stiff or sore.

Computer and Tools

I spend about half my week shooting content, like baking videos and craft tutorials. The other half is spent at my desk: editing videos or creating, planning, and scheduling content.

That's why adding a second monitor has been the best upgrade I've ever made. It completely changed my workflow.
